The Wainwright and Cohen families are very close, and in 2011, Leonard Cohen's daughter, Lorca, gave birth to a little girl, Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen (the "Katherine" a tribute to McGarrigle), whom she is raising with Rufus and Rufus' husband, Jorn Weisbrodt. McGarrigle died from cancer in 2010 at 63. She gave birth to Rufus in 1973 and raised him and his sister, Martha (also a musician), on her own in Montreal after divorcing Loudon in 1977.
